Marisol Solano didn't know that MEND had expanded to two facilities when she showed up to volunteer at what has now become the MEND Education and Training Center on Van Nuys Boulevard last September. She came with no expectations or demands, she didn't ask for any specific job. She only knew that she wanted to give back and be involved with the organization that had contributed so much to her family when she was young.
As a child, Marisol remembers being "super-excited" to get the "coolest presents for Christmas" from MEND. She remembers her mother being "fulfilled" by the meals she was able to prepare thanks to the food her family received from MEND. These are joyous memories for Marisol of wonderful gifts and food baskets.
Now an adult, she was ready to give back. She walked in and asked, "How can I help?" Her supervisor, Angie Gonzales, matched Marisol up with an ESL class that she now teaches every Friday morning. "She comes early and stays late," says Angie. "We're thankful she came back to the original building where she's a perfect fit!"
It's volunteers like Marisol who make MEND what it is. "It's more than just an organization," explains Marisol. "It's a community."
